Hey there, I'm Nancy

I'm an abstract artist, bestselling & award winning author of The Artist's Journey® and The Adjacent Possible® books as well as a Stanford educated psychiatrist.

I’ve been an artist and existential psychiatrist for over 20 years and I'm passionate about creativity, aliveness, and living your most meaningful life.

I've been an abstract painter for decades. Several years ago I created a television program "Creativity & Consciousness" where I interviewed artists on their creative process. I learned that artists in every genre grapple with fear and self-doubt and that the interior landscape affects everything!

I believe that abstract painting is a powerful way of getting at meaning and that art is a mirror that reflects our lives…the canvas reflects back our feelings, moods, interior states, and life.

What You’ll Learn In The Modules

Module 1: Welcome To Experimenting With Color

Welcome to Experimenting With Color. You’ll explore and experiment with mixing color combinations such as secondary, intermediary, and analogous color schemes. You’ll discover how to simplify your palette as well as learn tips on color contrast that will wow you!

Module 2: Tertiary, Complementary & Neutral Colors

In this module you’ll explore an array of color schemes including how to create gorgeous tertiary colors from secondary color mixes. You’ll also create an array of neutrals with warm and cool variations using complementary colors. These color palettes can be used to create powerful, harmonious paintings.

Module 3: Experimentation, Simplicity & Constraint

In this module you’ll explore the potent practice of simplicity and constraint while experimenting with color. You’ll create one and two color palettes and see the power in these. You’ll learn how to create a four color/two value palette that my students have found to be a game changer!

Module 4: Further Color Experimentation

In this module you’ll learn the secrets of visual contrast using color. You’ll see a video where I analyze several paintings in terms of visual contrast and how you can create visual excitement by increasing color contrast. I’ll show you ways of working with the middle of the painting and there will be tips and commentary on this process.

Module 5: Investigating Color Through Experimentation

In this module, you’ll see me begin a painting starting with color contrast concepts. Through five videos you’ll see me complete the painting and I’ll give you my thoughts and tips along the way. In particular, commentary from me about staying intuitive through the entire process of creating the painting.

Module 6: Experimenting With Water & Color

In this module, you’ll see me explore secondary and tertiary colors and water.
